International Folk Dance Summer School
University of Wales, Swansea. 28 July to 4 August, 2012SIFD Summer Schools
The Society for International Folk Dancing has organised a Summer School, more or less every two years since 1962. Participants are dance enthusiasts and teachers from the UK and overseas. In 2010 we were in Swansea, home of the Summer School from its inception, apart from a break between 1987 and 2004 when we visited Hertford, Aberystwyth, Edinburgh, York and Durham. The dances are taught as recreational folk dances, as far as possible faithful to their original village settings. The material presented is of interest to dancers and those who teach, and in fact anyone with an interest in folk dance. All levels of experience are welcome; only enthusiasm for dance and folk culture, and a desire to learn, are required.
The 2010 Summer School was very successful, with 97 participants, and you can see pictures from 2010 and the previous Summer School held in 2008 (see
Photos 2008 and
Photos 2010).
Arrangements for 2012 will be very similar to those for previous years, but with different teachers. Full details, and an application form, are given on other pages.
The Society for International Folk Dancing is a UK-based, voluntary, non-profit-making, non-political association of people who enjoy learning and dancing folk dances from many countries. It was founded in 1946.
