SIFD Summer Schools
The Society for International Folk Dancing has organised a Summer School, more or less every two years since 1962. Participants are dance enthusiasts and teachers from the UK and overseas. Swansea has been the home of the Summer School from its inception apart from a break between 1987 and 2004 when we visited Aberystwyth, York and Durham. The dances are taught as recreational folk dances, as far as possible faithful to their original village settings. The material presented is of interest to dancers and those who teach, and in fact anyone with an interest in folk dance. All levels of experience are welcome; only enthusiasm for dance and folk culture and a desire to learn are required.
The 2008 Summer School was very successful with the three expert visiting teachers running the main courses in Bulgarian, Catalan, and General International Dancing (see page
Teachers). Additional afternoon courses, run by members, were popular, and participants had enough energy to dance again every evening at our social dances.
We had an enjoyable excursion to Aberglasney Gardens where the sun even shone, and a convivial celebratory dinner before the final dance.
You can view pictures of the Summer School (see page
Photos 2008). The details for 2008 will stay online until we have details for the next event. This will be held in the summer of 2010 — watch this space!
The Society for International Folk Dancing is a UK-based, voluntary, non-profit-making, non-political association of people who enjoy learning and dancing folk dances from many countries. It was founded in 1946.
